Corporate Wellness
Healthy Employees = Healthy Companies
Successful companies need healthy employees to keep their company in top form. High job stress is now more than twice as prevalent as it was 10 years ago. The demands of the work environment combined with other demands of daily life are leading to increased physical and mental illness, absenteeism and turnover. For example, in a 2003 update to a 10 year study conducted in 2001 for Health Canada indicated that 88% of employees reported moderate to high job overload. 58% reported high job overload and were:
• 5.6 times more likely to report high job stress,
• 3.5 times more likely to have high absenteeism levels,
• 2.3 times more likely to report high intent to change jobs, and
• 2.8 times more likely to miss work due to childcare issues.
A more recent study conducted by a researcher at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health notes that work stress costs Canadian employers $33 billion a year. About $11 billion of that shows up on the bottom line due to absenteeism, staff turnover, accidents and benefit payments. The remainder is spent on health care and services for stressed, sedentary and addiction-troubled workers.
Add to this, the concept of employee “Presenteeism”, which is a term to describe employees who are present at work but too distracted or burned out to be productive and effective on the job. People show up for work despite being exhausted which results in reduced performance and an increased likelihood of mistakes. This practice translates into lost revenue, increased expenses and, in a worst-case scenario, injury or death.
Today, incorporating a wellness program as an essential component of your company’s human resources strategy is imperative to business success. Research indicates that the return on investment in workplace health and wellness programs ranges from $3 to $8 for every dollar spent. Factor in reduced absenteeism and increased productivity and the return can be as high as $10 for every dollar spent.
